Strategies for Improving Skill

Fishing in an Oasis

I recommend you develop your cooking skills alongside fishing. You do not need to cook in order to fish, but the majority of fish are edible, and they taste better when cooked. Great tasting fish sell better too! For detailed suggestions, read the Fishing and Cooking 1-375 section.

If you are just trying the level fishing, and not cooking, gaining skill is easy: Fish anywhere you can fish without get-aways. The fastest method is described in the next section. Be cautious of "1-375 fishing guides" that instruct you to keep moving between zones: Frequently changing zones wastes a lot of travel time, and is not required unless you are leveling cooking.

To make the best use of your time, consider focusing on catching valuable fish. Leveling fishing by catching valuable fish will take a few hours longer, but you can make several hundred gold by skill 375. Suggestions can be found in the 1-375 with Gold section.

Most of this chapter contains 1-375 leveling guides. But I do not recommend gaining fishing skill by rapidly leveling from 1 to 375 at level 70. There are many advantages to gradually improving your fishing and cooking skills while you improve your own level:

  • The "low-level" fish caught in areas with low base skill requirements are genuinely useful at low-level. Cook them and use them to recover between combat.
  • There is good money to be made from mid-level mid-skill fishing: For example fishing for Deviate Fish or fishing from Floating Wreckage Pools.
  • Continuous fishing is likely to become rather boring. Better to break it up into lots of short sessions.
  • There are plenty of casual opportunities to fish during downtime. For example, while waiting for boats, or waiting to be called up to battlegrounds or raids.
  • Fishing in capital cities allows you to "rest", so you will gain experience from quests faster.
  • If you want to fish in the most difficult areas, you should also try and get some poles and fishing gear with bonuses to fishing skill. That means regular daily or weekly fishing (see below), which does not fit well with rapid skill development.

Gaining Fishing Gear

Reaching 375 fishing skill is not your only goal. To fish in the most difficult waters efficiently you will need an effective skill of 500. After lures, that's still 25 points above 375. So you should also gather poles and/or items of fishing gear that give bonuses.

At high level, poles are easiest to gain:

Other items of gear can be gained from the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza and the daily fishing quests.

Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza

Twink with Escort Fishing

Fishing for 2 hours each Sunday will slowly gain skill, and reward you with rare items of fishing gear. The extravaganza takes place on Sunday from 14:00 to 16:00. Rewards include Nat Pagle's Extreme Anglin' Boots and High Test Eternium Fishing Line. You might even win the Arcanite Fishing Pole.

Once your skill has reached 125, you can take part in the contest using +100 Aquadynamic Fish Attractors. You main aim is to catch rare fish, so you should fish for the full 2 hours.

If you are prepared to level fishing gradually, participate in the contest over several weeks. And if you normally find fishing boring, you might find the Extravaganza fun! Particularly where the factions are at war. Read more information about the contest »

Daily Fishing Quests

Completing the daily fishing quest sometimes rewards the angler with fishing gear, such as Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat. The skill required for the daily fishing quests varies by quest, as shown in the table below:

Skill Required by Daily Fishing Quests
QuestAreasFishing Skill Required
To castTo stop get-aways
Crocolisks in the CityStormwind City, Orgrimmar, or Ironforge175
Felblood FilletHellfire Peninsula or Shadowmoon Valley280375
Shrimpin' Ain't EasyZangarmarsh305400
Bait BanditsTerokkar Forest (avoid lakes)355450
The One That Got AwayNagrand (Lake Sunspring and Skysong Lake)395490

Only Crocolisks in the City can be completed by those with little fishing skill. I suggest only completing quests where you can fish without (or without many) get-aways: The catch rate for quest fish can be poor. Look for quest you can complete, but do not rely on the fishing dailies to level your skill: Most quests are not easy to do until you have around 350 skill, when you are almost done leveling. 1-375 at Level 70

For those who are already level 70, there are many different ways to get fishing skill to 375 quickly. It depends on what else you want to gain. What suits you?

The final sections of this chapter contain suggested approaches for level 70s. There is no "standard" method to level fishing. You may mix different methods to suit your personal style. Some of the suggestions may also be useful for those at lower level, but the text assumes level 70.
