Detailed mapping of hard to find areas within the zone is shown below.

Notes: School of Darter and Brackish Mixed School are found in the water between Allerian Stronghold, Firewing Point, and Tuurem. Highland Mixed School are only found the in the elevated lakes of Terokkar Forest (see below). There are no pools in Silmyr Lake (near Shattrath).

Quests: Outland Daily Fishing Quests start from Old Man Barlo, near Silmyr Lake. The quest Rather Be Fishin' (from Seth in Shattrath City) requires Pristine Shimmerscale Eels to be taken from the corpses of the Shimmerscale Eels in Silmyr Lake (not caught by fishing). Information applies to Terokkar Forest (except lakes Blackwind, Ere'Noru, Jorune and Silmyr). Open water also rarely contains Curious Crate, Enormous Barbed Gill Trout, Goldenscale Vendorfish, Huge Spotted Feltail, Inscribed Scrollcase and Mote of Water. These are not shown in the table.

Terokkar Forest (Lakes)

Notes: Includes Blackwind Lake, Lake Ere'Noru, Lake Jorune, and Silmyr Lake. Blackwind, Ere'Noru and Jorune require a flying mount or flight ability to reach. Silmyr Lake also has a higher base fishing skill than other areas of Terokkar Forest. Silmyr Lake is the water immediately east of Shattrath City. Silmyr Lake does not contain Highland Mixed School: Highland Mixed Schools are only found in Blackwind, Ere'Noru, and Jorune. Highland Mixed Schools are the only place to fish catch Furious Crawdad. These pools are also the only place to catch the famous Mr. Pinchy, who may grant the angler a Magical Crawdad pet. For more detail about how to fish these pools, read the Catching Furious Crawdad and Mr. Pinchy topic.

Open Water Skill: 500 to fish open water without junk.

Below are anglers' comments about Terokkar Forest.

Terokkar Forest/Shadowmoon Valley fishing change

  1. Christhina, October 2008:

I'm wondering if this was a "one time" occurrence or not, so thought I'd post here to share some information (possibly) and get some feedback.

Old Man Barlo's daily fishing quest for a Monstrous Felblood Snapper led me to find on this site the suggested "easy" location to fish from - which is namely standing on the Shadowmoon Valley side of the river that borders Terokkar Forest and Shadowmoon Valley. I usually fish this daily standing almost directly opposite the Bonechewer encampment (that is to say, close to the Allerian Stronghold "end" of this river).

In the past, I've usually landed some grey "quality" Felblood Snapper (useless in all respects apart from cashing in at a vendor for a tiny amount of copper), and after several catches, invariably land the Monstrous Felblood Snapper and go about the rest of my business. Until the other day, the abovementioned fish types were the _only_ fish I ever caught in this river (if memory serves, this fact is/was also documented here on this site).

In completing this daily the other day, in my usual spot, with usual gear etc (i.e. nothing unusual), lo and behold, I am pulling up Spotted Feltail and Golden Darter, among the usual, and useless Felblood Snapper.

Here's the conundrum - I don't recall seeing any notes posted anywhere regarding this change, of course, with the sheer volume of WoW related news lately, this would probably slip under the radar anyway - but it has me curious. Additionally - if I recall correctly (and I have to confess some doubt on this myself), I seem to remember fishing the same spot not long prior with no usable fish being caught, and I don't remember any maintenance in between those two times - which, on the surface, would indicate that this may have been changed via a hotfix (?!)

I'd be interested to read anyone's feedback on this, and also would like to take this chance to thank you, El, for such a great and informative site - it's helped me considerably back in the day when I was levelling fishing, and I keep coming back for more information on a regular basis :-)

  2. el, October 2008:

As far as I know, Barbed Gill Trout were removed from Shadowmoon Valley by a stealth change in patch 2.4, leaving only Felblood Snapper (and the daily fish, if you have the quest). If you are gaining other fish it is possible your bobber is landing across the river in Terokkar Forest. The only way to be sure is to fish in the lava inside the zone.

  3. Shircon, October 2008:

I believe El is correct....i have gotten Barbed gill and Golden Darter out of the same spot and im positive it was on a far cast closer to the other side of the river...no patch or maintenence involved...

  1. Christhina, October 2008:

Fair call - what puzzles me is that, without moving (although obviously my cast lands in different places each time), I'm reliably able to catch the quest Monstrous Felblood Snapper standing here :-)

  2. thiealze, October 2008:

I found moving to the other side of the bridge (north side) made my Titan Panel change location from Terrokar Forest to Shadowmoon Valley. The old spot (I used it only two days ago) seems to waffle between the two zones.

As long as your character is standing in Shadowmoon Valley (you can also simply open the map to see which zone pops up if you don't have a coordinates addon), the bobber location in the river itself doesn't seem to matter.

  3. el, October 2008:

I just checked this again, and the catch (and skill required) is still determined by where the bobber lands, not where you are standing. The Terokkar Forest/Shadowmoon Valley border is a quirky one, because the border runs at approximately a 45 degree angle to North-South, while all the border zones seem to be defined at 90 degree angles. So the true border tends to zig-zag along the river. The result is that sometimes you can be fishing in Shadowmoon, even when the bobber has landed in the water next to the Terokkar river bank.

Lower level at Blackwind Lake/Terokk's Nest

  1. Nizdaran, September 2008:

I've been trying to get Mr. Pinchy the last few days while leveling up fishing and found a interesting oddity. It seems that if you stand in the nook underneath the tower on the eastern side of Terokk's Nest island in blackwind lake the level requirement drops, this is the spot right in front of the eastern most fishing pool on the island. I had forgotten to attach my lure and was able to cast at at least 372 though the fish almost always got away leading me to beleive the level requirement is close to that. I'm curious if this is a odd glitch to my server or if someone else could verify this?

Edit: It appears the entire southern part of the island is set lower, with some fiddling of equipment I found it to be at 355.

  2. el, September 2008:

When the area was new, part of the water close to the island in the middle of the lake had the same skill as the easier waters of Terokkar Forest (355 to cast). One Highland Mixed School used to appear there. When they redesigned the area for the Skyguard daily quests, the obvious oddities were removed. But it is entirely possible there is still a very small area which is inconsistent. Make a note of where the bobber lands, and then try and swim precisely on that location. You should find the name of the area (displayed above the minimap) changes to something different.

  3. Nizdaran, September 2008:

I hear what your saying but that dosn't seem to be it, far to consistent. Upon further study, I'm still checking this out, the area apears to strech a considerable portion of the south western part of the island, breaks as soon as you step on the rock oucropping the makes up the far southern tip, and then starts again for the small part you can step on on the southern eastern portion. There appear to be at least two schools that appear in these lower areas. Both seem to be set to 355.

higher fishing level?

  1. lyrabelacqua, March 2008:

I used to fish where the new questgiver is at Lake Silmyr in Terrokar with just a bright bauble and have no getaways. Now I cannot cast--was the fishing level increased? Just Lake Silmyr? (I'm currently at 353 in fishing gear and no lure).

  2. el, March 2008:

Skill has increased to 405/500, but only in Silmyr Lake. Same value as areas where Highland Mixed Schools are found. The rest of Terokkar Forest looks unchanged. Thanks for the tip-off.

(My guess is that the lake was grouped in with the elevated lakes on the last patch, so that the quest fish couldn't be caught by standing right next to the quest-giver.)
